Thaicom and Mae Fah Luang Foundation under Royal Patronage partner to bring space technology

Thaicom Public Company Limited signed the partnership agreement with M.L. Dispanadda Diskul, Chief Executive Officer of the Mae Fah Luang Foundation under Royal Patronage, a private, non-profit organization dedicated to creating economic, social, and environmental sustainability since 1972, to develop a space technology-based carbon credit assessment platform to measure biomass in the Mae Fah Luang Foundation’s community forests in Thailand. The platform will benefit Thailand's forestry sector to increase efficiency in reducing greenhouse gases emissions.

Thaicom will leverage its expertise in satellite and space technology to bring geospatial data from remote sensing satellites integrated with Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) to develop a data analytics platform for carbon credit assessment. The Mae Fah Luang Foundation will share its data from the carbon credit projects as well as provide its knowledge on the implementation of the Thailand Voluntary Emission Reduction Program (T-VER) under the Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organization (Public Organization) or TGO.

Mr. Patompob (Nile) Suwansiri, Thaicom’s CEO said, “Thaicom is committed to creating space tech solutions that will benefit society, the community, and the environment. This strong commitment has driven us to win SET’s Sustainability Award 2023 with an ESG Rating of AAA in 2023, reflecting our performance in terms of supporting the nation's sustainable development, particularly in the environmental sector. Our collaboration with the Mae Fah Luang Foundation marks a significant milestone in delivering GHG measurement capability by utilizing our expertise in remote sensing satellite and Geospatial intelligence data to analyze with artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to accurately monitor tree health and measure the amount of biomass in the forests. It is a great opportunity to accelerate potential mitigation efforts to drive Thailand toward carbon neutrality in the future.”

M.L. Dispanadda Diskul, Chief Executive Officer of Mae Fah Luang Foundation under Royal Patronage said, “The Mae Fah Luang Foundation, with the Royal Forest Department, 14 leading companies, and 77 communities nationwide, has implemented the “Carbon Credit from Community Forests for Sustainability” project since 2020 covering over 31,100 hectares. We hope that this first step of success will lead to a better and wider conservation of natural resources in the country. In 2024, we are planning to expand the project area to another 24,000 hectares, and to many more in coming years. This collaboration with Thaicom in developing a more accurate and faster assessment of carbon credits is the key to advancing ecosystem of GHG mitigation projects in the forestry sector of Thailand. It will enable the collaboration among the government, the private and public sector in forest conservation easier, faster, and more transparent. At present, Thaicom has started incorporating its technological expertise with the Mae Fah Luang Foundation’s database of biomass measurement. In the near future, this new platform is approved by the Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organization (Public Organization), it will enable community participation in improving the quality of life and conserving forests. It is also a stepping stone to drive Thailand towards the goals of carbon neutrality by 2050 and Net Zero GHG Emission by 2065.”
